Whatchamacallit?

Online Video, Web Television, Web Media, Content, Web Series, New Media, Webisodes, Online Series, they’re all words we use to describe the videos we make and distribute online, but shouldn’t we have solidified a term for them by now? As people who spend an exorbitant amount of time thinking about the creation of these videos, it would be nice if we came to some sort of consensus, right? It seems like every faction is lobbying for their own term to win. Tubefilter seems smitten with “Web Television”, while NewTeeVee Station promises to find us the “best web video” and Tilzy.tv dances around “entertainment on the web” and “Internet-TV”. So what is it?

And as the people who make these shows, shouldn’t our titles be solidified as well? Creator seems to be the snuggest fit, but I’ve referred to myself as a Producer, a Writer-Director and a Hyphenate (I know, gross) on multiple occasions. It’s clear that we’re all wearing multiple hats, and that the old definitions we used to define our roles are out dated and insufficient.

So what do you think? The way we brand ourselves now could have relevant ramifications in the future. If your label isn’t representative of what you do, then it could keep you from gaining future work. If we’re to explain our rolesĀ  every time we’re asked what it is we “do” (not to mention what New Media is in the first place) then we’re in for some long, arduous conversations.

Until then, you can just call me an Internet Czar.

Well if i remember correctly “New Media” is an old term that was pretty much retired in the late 90s so not quite sure why everyone is trying to bring it back to life. So, that is one less you have to worry about:):):)

I understand what you say, it’s hard to explain what’s it all this. I like web series and web shows… even webisodes!

If you’ve any idea please tell me
