Can we please talk about “The Remnants”?
Screenwriter John August finally released the first (and it looks like only) episode of his web series The Remnants today. I love seeing my favorite film makers try their hand at web content, so I was pleased to hear that Mr. August had joined our ranks.
From day one, John August must have been an obvious choice for 60 frames. His web presence is strong and his writing career is even stronger. Combining established talent in front of the camera and behind, on line (Ze Frank!) and offline (Justine Bateman!*), should be as safe a bet as they come.
Unfortunately for the viewer, Episode 1 is as far as this experiment goes**. Interest from potential sponsors seems to have dissipated. While there’s plenty to love in the show, without an audience, the money dries up along with our chances of finding out what the deal with the Grand Canyon is.
Maybe we’re all just spoiled. There have been countless, awesome pilots that never saw the light of day. I should be grateful to see a film maker I admire test the waters in my chosen medium, whether we get another episode or not.
UPDATE: NewTeeVee station weighs in.
* I know, I know, Justine Bateman is also online talent, but most people don’t know that yet.
** Unless fans give Mr. August, who retained the rights for his show, a reason to make more…
